No mention of System Shock 2? Mein gott, that game was something else. From memory, the short(ish) version is that you wake up from cryogenic sleep on an exploration starship you're stationed on. While you've been asleep, it's been struck and nearly taken over by an alien force called The Many, who communicate with each other through a group mind. Throughout the game, you come across the crew's audio logs which often enough detail their final moments before they're either killed or taken over by the alien infection. You'll often be attacked by these infected crew members, even as they scream "KILL ME!" or "Hurry! RUN!" at you, which freaked me out a lot. So here I am, a marine with years of training/experience behind me and I'm panicking. I have an alien consciousness whispering in my head "Join us!", a handful of ammo to burn, a hijacked security grid with eyes out for me, I'm fighting alone, and basically the whole world's gone to shit. Resident Evil 3 was also a (unexpectedly) scary experience for me. I guess the idea of a ginormous and damned well unkillable brute chasing after me made me feel very, very small. I remember the first time I "killed" him, I had taken a pause and breathed a sigh of relief. And then the bastard gets right back up and rushes at me, roaring like somebody had pissed in his cornflakes. It was in RE3 that they also added the ability for enemies to follow you through rooms, so it's not like I could just run through the nearest door and escape the guy unless it had a very solid lock. And far too often, I'd hear the crash of glass elsewhere in the building or somesuch anyway. The fucker really wanted me dead. I'll throw AvP in too. Wasn't quite a "scary" game for me, but it certainly had me jumpy, even as a predator. The tight spaces along with the insanely speedy aliens kept me on edge as I played through. I suppose the common theme among those is intelligent monsters hunting your lonesome down. I was supposed to be some kind of hardass in 'em too, but that facade steadily crumbled over time. Knowing something bad's gonna happen but not knowing when or how. I.E. Anxiety. Oh, and this too. Once I'd thrown RE3's brute off my trail, I'd never know when he'd pop up again. In SS2, I sometimes ran into security cameras because I didn't take the time to scope a place out, or run across a infected crewman creeping around and searching for me. Either was a good way of jarring me out of whatever plan I had in my head.
