one thing i never saw ony hl2 was rain, how cool would it be to rain and thunder, especially in ravenholm, where only the flash of lightning reveals hords of the undead! i found a few tutorials but never really seen a rainy or snowy level.

yeah man, tell me about it, this is something i've always wanted as well. They -do- exist, but as far as looking good or adding to the visual appeal, haha not so sure.
i think the rain effect in hl2 was more of a tech demo or something, but hey, maybe it can be looked into, and maybe it can be improve, there's always maybe!

Rain, snow and ash. They are all just sprites and we know how vet likes to play with sprites... I think its safe to say that we might see some weather effects in the future.

As seen in EP1. If you go into some of the old bug report threads from way back when. You will find that one of the things I mentioned was that the sprites for the ash where missing. Although this turned out not to be your fault as I don't think valve left them in the final build of HL2. If you play the beta and look at some of the beta screen shots you will see the weather in action.
I’ll tell you what, I made a sample map a while back with some volumetric (brush based) entities, I’ll see if I can’t find it.

shit, i remember now, it was when i disabled the mounting, in one of the utility/dev maps you made me, you had that issue...i see now i understand...what if we move the texture/particle folder by hand into smod, i wonder if that would work...OR if its within ep1's sourcode...but...if all that was missing was the texture...that means thats the only thing we gotta put i9n outbreak, as long as the mapper (YOU) puts the ashes in, it should be able to find em... ashes.... ash you say??! ASHES!

Aha, I new I had it kicking around somewhere. : files.filefront.com/13777964this is a map I made a while back now just to learn how to create some of the entities. just load it up in HL2 or outbreak and look around if your interested.

What do you think of the rain? It could use some work but it might be workable.

dude i thought it would look WAY worse than that, the rain is definitely doable, definitely worthy of being in the map the heat effect was also pretty sweet, i Especially enjoyed the...flaming ashes? or whatever they work, damn i love that i wonder if,....they can be ....mapadded? who knows, ill ask big buisy when i get the chance yeah we can definitely use the rain, maybe i can change the texture to use the same kinda parameters the "water dripping" uses when you come out of the water, so they rain will look like raining jelly!
